The name aside, Old Jock is a great beer, as I expected Broughton. I discovered this brewery a long time back, though their excellent Black Douglas. Old Jock is their sweeter, almost Wee Heavy brew. It start with a strong nose, reminiscent of dark fruit or prunes, sweet, like dried fruit smells.

Old Jock is a fantastic beer, and one that combines a depth of flavour with an inviting ruby colour unsurpassed by any other from a Scottish brewery - it has to be one of the best-looking I've ever seen. The food pairing the guys at Broughton suggest for Old Jock is strong cheeses - and they aren't kidding.

May 26, 2022 by Rob It is not often I try a new beer mid week, that normally falls to the weekends. However this little number dropped in my lap by chance last night. So I cracked it open and found myself drinking Old Jock Ale, Strong and Bold. When I think of Scottish beer, I think strong and full bodied, and I am not wrong with this brew.

Old Jock Scotch Ale (6.7% ABV) is from Broughton Brewery, Scotland's original independent brewery founded in 1979 by David Younger of the famous Younger Scottish brewing family. From its base in Broughton in the Scottish Borders, not far from Biggar, Old Jock was one of the original trailblazers for the Campaign For Real Ale (CAMRA) in the 1980s.
